Homade Ginger Ale Syrup
Homemade Ginger Syrup for Ginger Ale
by Jennifer Carlisle
Ginger Ale is one of my favorite sodas. It's not just good when you are sick and not feeling well, it's also good to drink whenever you want. It's great to mix with alcohol, or with a melon mint slush. You can also use it while you are cooking, for instance, with my Ginger-Apple Cider Pork Chops and Sweet Potatoes. This ginger ale recipe is simple, and allows you to make it as strong as you would like. You will only need 4 ingredients and some water and ice. I hope you enjoy this recipe!!
Ingredients:
-1 cup turbinado sugar (you can also use granulated sugar)
-1 cup water
-1/2 cup peeled and diced fresh ginger root
-1 fresh lemon peel
- 4 cups club soda
ice
lime or lemon as garnish (optional)
Ginger Root unpeeled
Ginger root peeled and diced
Lemon slice with the rind taken off of one half. That's all you need for the syrup, use the rest as garnish if you wish.
1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. I used Turbinado, that's why it is so dark, and those are a few pieces of ginger I already started adding.
All of the ginger and lemon peel in the water and sugar. Stir and bring to boil. Then simmer for 10 minutes.
Mesh strainer and a 2 cup measuring cup to strain the syrup and ginger root.
Separated ginger pieces, either throw them away or save them for something else, if you wish.
Ginger syrup- remember it's so dark because of the sugar I used. It will be lighter if you use granulated sugar.
Fill glasses with ice.
Club soda
Pour 1 cup of club soda into a 20 oz glass with ice.
Add 1/4 cup of ginger syrup to club soda, stir and enjoy.
Directions:
Clean, peel and dice enough ginger root to fill a 1/2 cup measuring cup. Cut a slice of lemon and remove the rind (peel) and reserve. In a small sauce pan add sugar, water, ginger and lemon peel, bring up to boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved. Once boiling, turn heat to low and allow to simmer uncovered for 10 min. When done simmering, pour ginger syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl or large glass, I used a 2 cup measuring cup. Separating the ginger root and ginger syrup.
You can either mix all of it together, the 1 cup of syrup and 4 cups of club soda in a pitcher and pour into glasses or serve individually as needed, reserving the leftover syrup covered in the fridge.
To serve individually, fill a 20 oz glass 3/4 with ice, then add 1 cup club soda, and 1/4 cup of the ginger syrup (slowly add the syrup, it makes the soda fizz and can overflow out of your glass if you add it too quickly. I know this from experience!). Stir well, and serve with a lime or lemon wedge.
To serve in a pitcher, combine club soda and syrup in a 2 qt. pitcher, stir well and serve over ice with lemon or lime garnish.
*If you like a stronger ginger ale add more diced ginger to the syrup to boil, or add more syrup to your club soda.
*makes 4- 10oz glasses of ginger ale.
